1. The Structural Skeleton (The Frame)

The frame is the “chassis” of the building. In prefab kits, this is typically made from galvanized high-tensile steel.

• Portal Frames:The main ribs of the building. These consist of Rafters (the roof beams) and Columns (the wall posts) joined at the “knee.”
• Purlins:Horizontal members bolted across the rafters to support the roof sheets.
• Girts:Horizontal members bolted between columns to support the wall cladding.
• Base Plates:Heavy-duty steel plates welded or bolted to the bottom of columns to anchor the structure to the concrete.

2. Exterior Cladding (The Shell)

The “skin” of the building provides shear strength and weatherproofing.

• Roof Sheets:Usually feature a higher profile rib (e.g., 25–35 mm) to handle water runoff and prevent leakage.
• Wall Sheets:Often have a lower profile for a cleaner aesthetic.
• Barge Capping:The trim that covers the edge where the roof meets the gable ends.
• Ridge Cap:The peak component that seals the gap where the two roof slopes meet.
• Corner Flashing:L-shaped trim that seals the vertical corners where two walls meet, preventing wind and vermin entry.

3. Bracing Systems

Without bracing, a metal building can “rack” or lean under wind pressure.

• Cross-Bracing (X-Bracing):Galvanized steel cables or straps installed in an “X” pattern between frames. These turn the walls and roof into rigid diaphragms.
• Fly Bracings:Small brackets connecting the purlins to the bottom flange of the rafter to prevent the frame from twisting under heavy loads.

4. Openings & Hardware

• Jambs and Headers:Extra steel framing around doors and windows to maintain structural integrity where the wall cladding is cut.
• Personal Access (PA) Doors:Usually pre-hung steel doors with a weather-shield header.
• Roller Doors / Large Double Doors:These require heavy-duty vertical tracks bolted directly into the main structural columns.
• Fasteners:Neoprene-bonded washers and self-tapping “Tek” screws, color-coded to match the cladding.
